Ryburgh Ladies Cricket Team
These 4 photos, (most kindly supplied by Pauline Smith) looking very Edwardian but of unknown date, show ladies of Great Ryburgh playing cricket on the meadow where Hillcrest was built in the late 1940's.
Clearly visible is the school and adjacent cottages, with the butcher's yard nearest the meadow and the Manor House.
One photo is taken looking down the field to the road and shows a building no longer there. This building was once a carpenter's shop and stood on the roadside immediately next door to the Railway Inn and is clearly shown on a deed map and the 1886 and 1906 O.S. map, reproduced by kind permission:
It looks very much from the above photos that something very similar is going on to that which was reported in the Oxfordshire Telegraph on Wednesday 14th September 1892:
Of course "P.C." didn't come into it in those days but if you can help identify anyone participating or have any other information about this team we'd love to hear from you.

The W.I. has long been active in Great Ryburgh and it would be marvellous if more of it's history were available to share. To whet the appetite are a few pictures, some well circulated and others not so well known. Some are from a collection of Jack Watson's photos copied by kind permission of his granddaughter, Cathy. We hope this might encourage more to come to light.
