Not on the War Memorials

The  criteria for inclusion on Memorials and Roll's of Honour are not always consistant and the following names would seem to have as legitimate a claim to a place in Ryburgh as those included on the "Official Lists"  

Those who died

 

Guy Wade Burtenshaw       London Regiment                   June 18th. 1915

His father and step-mother lived in Little Ryburgh and died in Great Ryburgh.

 

Alfred Benjamin Clements         Norfolk Regiment        October 13th. 1915

He worked at F & G Smith  Maltings  and is on their Roll of Honour.

 

Frank Noel Tuff               Royal East Kent Yeomanry    November 5th. 1915

He was the Brother-in-Law, of Lt. Col. H.F.E. Smith, married to his sister Muriel.

 

Edgar Phillip Huckins              Grenadier Guards        December 24th. 1915

Married to Susannah, sister of Ernest Nelson and worked at F& G Smith Maltings.

 

Arthur William Allison                  Norfolk Regiment          July 19th. 1916

Born in Little Ryburgh. Thomas Allison’s brother.

 

William Ainger Howman                 Suffolk Regiment           July 20th. 1916

Born in Great Ryburgh and a part of the Ryburgh Howman clan.

 

Herbert Jeremiah Chapman Jubilee Pallant  Norfolk Regt.October 12th.1916  

Lived in Common Lane before war next-door to his parents.

 

Bertie John Doy                Norfolk Regiment        October 28th. 1916 

His mother Charlotte kept the Marine Tavern in Ryburgh.

 

Joseph Thomas Baker               Queen's Regiment         March 17th.1917

Married to Edith Nobes their son James was  baptised in Ryburgh on July 19th 1916

Born in Stibbard and Arthur Allison’s brother.

 

William John Hall                  Queen's Regiment             April 23rd. 1917

Born in Little Ryburgh.

 

William John Framingham          Royal Fusilliers                 May 3rd.1917

Born in Great Ryburgh.

 

Anthony Edgar Hammond Princess Pat's Canadian L.I. November 28th.1917

Elder Son of Edith Smith, one of the donors of the  Ryburgh Bells.

 

Albert Fox Codling            Bedfordshire Regiment          March 22nd. 1918

Born in Stibbard, married widow Louisa Nelson, mentioned 3 times in Parish Magazine.

 

Charles Smith McDonald  King's Own Scotttish Borderers  April 20th .1918

Married Lily Dora Doy daughter of Robert Bailey Doy and Jane Nelson.

 

Charles Henry Hall             Royal Horse Artillery               April 22nd. 1918

Lived at Hill Farm Gateley and attended Ryburgh School. 

 

George Frederick Edgar Smith  Australian Imperial Force  August 15th.1918

Eldest son of George Frederick Smith one of the donors of the Ryburgh Bells.

 

Henry Charles Moy M.M.         Hampshire Regiment         August 26th. 1918

Born in Great Ryburgh of old Ryburgh family.

 

Nicholas Brightmer Gould         Norfolk Regiment             August 27th. 1918

From N. Elmham, worked in Ryburgh and is on the Roll of Honour but not War Memorials.

 

Charles Veasey Cooper     Australian Imperial Force     September 19th. 1918

Eldest son of Thomas  Cooper (Ryburgh Farmers' Foundry).


William James Holman   Norfolk Regt.att.K. A. R.      January 4th 1919

Married to Mabel Ely. Taught at Ryburgh School and left in 1913 for Attleborough.

There is one other category that has not yet been fully explored in Ryburgh and that is of the role of women. At present we can include just one, and she was Agnes Chastney but it is hoped that in time more names may come to the fore.
